Mom Chaffe’s Cellarette — West Reading, PA

We were tired of the usual Berks County bar food circuit, so on a ChatGPT recommendation we tried Mom Chaffe’s Cellarette — a place that’s apparently been tucked into the bottom floor of a West Reading row home since the 1930s. Went with the Mrs. and our daughter for an early 5pm reservation.

Walking in, you’d swear you got teleported to a basement spot in NYC. Small, close tables, low ceilings — low enough that I had to duck under some exposed pipes to get to our table. Intimate Italian vibe, the real kind, not the “we hung some wine bottles on the wall” kind.

We played it traditional to start: bruschetta and fried mushrooms, plus a Super Tuscan that ChatGPT picked out for us, which was genuinely good wine.

For entrees, I went chicken parm, which came in a little overcooked with pasta that didn’t do much for me — not bad, just not the fine dining moment I was hoping for. The Mrs. ordered the lobster mac and cheese and that thing was a knockout — thick, gooey, cheesy, looked as good as it tasted. Daughter had a salmon special in a pink sauce and gave it a thumbs up.

Service was what you’d want from a place calling itself fine dining — nothing rushed, everything hot, well timed. Quiet too, though we were early enough that we beat any crowd.

Cost was in line with other local Italian spots, but the atmosphere made it feel like more value than the receipt suggested. That “hole-in-the-wall NYC” feeling does a lot of heavy lifting here. If you’re after an experience, this is the place. If you want a mountain of food for your money, look elsewhere.

The Verdict: Whelmed

Solidly good on a normal scale, but let’s be honest, we’re grading on the Berks County curve here, and on that scale this one teeters right up against Actually Overwhelmed. My chicken parm undercut it a little, but the lobster mac and the setting alone almost carried it there.
